July 24 Recap

By Marc Brafman

It’s a minor miracle we’ve actually played 3 scheduled games in a row!

On field 1 it was Team Fogel vs. Team Buttermaker

Joel, pinch hitting for Jeremy, leads off.

I’m pinch hitting for the younger Fogel as he was out of town attending a friend’s wedding.

On a steamy Sunday morning the men in navy were a bit short handed, using 4 subs, and persevered to beat the Team Rosenthal 11-9.  The bats and defense were both on point early for team Fogel.  Tait Cunningham continues his hot hitting and was on base 4 times as Team Fogel got off to a 11-1 lead going into the 5th inning.  Rosenthal wouldn’t quit, scoring 4 runs in the top of the fifth to avoid the run rule.  The offense for Fogel cooled and the comeback was on for Rosenthal.  Up 5 runs in the top of the 7th, Rosenthal plated 3 and had the tying run at the plate but Jamey Kurtzer masterfully worked through the jam and Fogel prevailed 11-9.  Thanks to Mendel Creeger who made his JCC debut as a last-minute sub for Fogel.  Creeger was on base twice and made a few key catches in RF.

On Field 2, it was Team Weisser vs. Team Lefton

Team Lefton won 10-7. Report will be included on Thursday’s blog.

On field 3 we had Team Grefer vs. Team Z

Kyle for the winners:

Team Grefer defeated Team Zawatsky 14-8. Howie pitched a great game, with about half of their runs unearned due to some errors. Offensive MVP was Chris Kunkel, who didn’t make an out and had two triples. It was a close back and forth game until the 6th inning when the offense exploded scoring 8 runs. Josh Rosen made some nice running and sliding catches in left center and AJ Goldhoff played a solid shortstop with a slick play up the middle showing off his range and flipping the ball to second base. The defense improved as the game went on and it was capped off with a smooth double play in the last inning where Zach Michelson made a great scoop at first.

And on Field 4, it was Team Solomon vs. half a team Brafman

Stu for the Winners:

Team Solomon continues to roll in the 2nd half, beating a depleted Team Brafman 13-3.

Team Solomon jumped out to an early lead scoring 4 in the 1st and 4 in the 2nd inning. The top 6 of the line-up produced 13 runs. Tyler ” The Wonderkid” Stansbury, Ryan “ROY” Marcus, Stuart “El Capitan” Solomon and Gregg “Triple G” Harris were on base 3 times each.

Defensively, Corey “Chuck” Norris pitched another great game. The best defensive play came from Ian “McKellen” Cromer. There was a flair to RF, he turns and on a dead sprint makes an ice cream cone, over the shoulder catch.

Capt. Brafman would like to add that Todd “The Mayor” Wasserman continues his impressive hitting with two knocks and would like to thank his subs who did their best yesterday in the losing effort.

League notes will return on Thursday but while I’m thinking about it, if you would like to pitch next season, Jimmy Lefton has volunteered to help anybody that would like to learn or improve their pitching.  Let us know if you are interested.

Fingers crossed the rain holds off…
