For the second week in a row, when things were looking bleak, they came back in the latter stages of
the game to bring home the victory…..
After trailing 5-3 going into the bottom of the sixth inning, the victors exploded for nine runs in part
due to some clutch hitting off the bats of PETE SPOERL, HOWIE SCHWARTZ and JERRY
KIRZNER…..
On the mound, SCHWARTZ pitched a masterful game giving up five runs…..all unearned…..
OF NOTE…….After what appeared to be a meltdown of some players (NOT to be named),
SCHWARTZ called a team meeting in the middle of the fifth inning to right the ship….
“It’s the first team meeting I’ve had in 55 years,” SCHWARTZ said afterwards.

GROH….LEADER….SCHWARTZ……WEISSER ADVANCE TO SEMIS……
In one game….
TEAM GROH defeated TEAM GREFER, 13-6, in a much closer game than the score indicated, to
advance to the semi-finals and remain in the hunt for the JCC top prize…..the JCC tournament title…..
1B JUSTIN KIRCHNER of TEAM GROH was pumped and ready to go earlier in the day and it
showed as he went 2 for 2, drove in two runs and made some good defensive plays……
After falling behind 1-0 early on, RICK TENNENHOLTZ drove in the first run for his team to start a
surge that gave TEAM GROH the lead….DAN GILBERT scored to make it 4-1 after three innings
and RYAN BAUM’S leadoff triple in the fourth inning produced another run and it was 5-2 after four
innings…
It was 6-3 heading to the sixth inning when TEAM GREFER tied the game at 6-6 only to have
TEAM GROH score the next seven runs thanks in part to a “perfect” bunt by BEN BARNETT and a
RBI hit by JACK COHEN….
Player Of The Game honors went to NOAH GILBERT, playing in his final game of the season, who
went 3 for 4 with two runs scored, two RBI’s (on a Texas league hit) and caught seven fly balls in the
outfield……
On the losing side, JEFF WEISBROT went 4 for 4………
TEAM GROH now plays TEAM WEISSER in one semi-final with the winner going to the finals……
In other action…..
TEAM SCHWARTZ had another signature comeback for the second week in a row when it counted
as they came back from a 6-1 deficit to win a 7-6 nail bitter over TEAM HIUDT…..
Pitcher MIKE GRAY had everything going his way until the fifth inning when TEAM SCHWARTZ
scored three runs to make it a 6-4 lead and then scored three more runs in the sixth inning to take a 7-
6 lead…..TEAM HIUDT got the tying run (JAMIE KURTZER) on first base in the top of the seventh,
but HOWARD SCHWARTZ struck out the last batter to end the threat to advance to the semi-
finals…..
There were many key plays and players, but veteran JERRY KIRZNER had to be at the top of the list
as he went 3 for 3 and played a solid 1B……MIKE ROTHSTEIN produced the game winning run
with a clutch two out hit to score KIRZNER who not only scored himself earlier in the inning, but
also scored the winning run as a courtesy runner in the decisive sixth inning….
PETE SPOERL, ALAN LESSURE, ROGER ROSENTHAL, RYAN SMALL, DAVID SOLOMON,
CORY NORRIS and sub DANIEL HIUDT, all contributed in some way to help advance to the semi-
finals in a rubber game match vs. TEAM LEADER……
