The first round of the tournament was played Wednesday night and the results were……#8 TEAM WEISBROT over #1 TEAM SCHWARTZ……#2 TEAM GUTTMAN over #7 TEAM WAGNER…..# 6 TEAM ROTHSTEIN over # 3 TEAM LEFTON and finally # 4 TEAM GREFER over # 5 TEAM LEADER………..
DETAILS TO FOLLOW…………
*In the UPSET of the week, # 1 seeded TEAM SCHWARTZ was defeated by # 8 seeded TEAM WEISBROT, 7-6, in a very exciting game and an unbelievable finish……..
After a very spirited pep talk by BEN RODRIGUEZ before the game, TEAM WEISBROT took a 5-2 lead into the the bottom of the 6th inning only to have TEAM SCHWARTZ score four runs to lead 6-5……with the top of the order up for TEAM WEISBROT, the FRANKELS, father NORM and son JOSH took over with huge hits to tie the game and pep talker RODRIGUEZ had an infield single with the bases loaded to bring in the go ahead run…….
in the bottom of the 7th inning, TEAM SCHWARTZ got their first two batters on only to have pitcher STU WEINSTEIN, subbing for the injured MIKE GRAY, wiggle out of the inning by getting the 1-2-3 hitters to complete the win……..
Kudos go to the entire team as everyone contributed either at the plate and/or on the field with a special kudos to key hits early in the game by DAVID WEIL (triple) and TEDDY “BALLGAME” KANTER (RBI single) that gave the victors the initial lead…..ZACH HIUDT hit a homerun, JOSH FRANKEL played another stellar left centerfield and RODRIGUEZ played a solid first base……
**#6 seed TEAM ROTHSTEIN avenged two regular season losses to # 3 seed TEAM LEFTON, 6-2, as defense was the name of the game……the victors started out with a four run first inning sparked by COREY NORRIS and MOST IMPROVED PLAYER CANDIDATE, LEV “UK FLASH” ORLOV…..Xavier alum PETE SPOERL and MIKE “KT” KADETZ provided some key hits and great defensive plays were turned in by DOUG SANDOR, NORRIS and STEVE “THE DOUGHNUT MAN” EPPSTEIN…..captain MICHAEL ROTHSTEIN had to shuffle the defense a little at the start as he only had nine players, but recruited BILLY KAHN from the stands to fill in at 1B with ROTHSTEIN going to leftfield (you read correctly) and SPOERL to shortstop…….
As a sidenote…..ROTHSTEIN’S team was one of the older teams in recent memory as they had KAHN, mid 50’s, KADETZ, 60 ish, SPOERL, 50’S, SANDOR, 60 ish, ANDY HELDMAN 60 ish, and EPSSTEIN, 60’s……
On the lone highlight for the losers, DAVID “DEE” HARRIS had a two run single to provide the lone offense…….
***TEAM GUTTMAN, using the power of the grand salami and the pitching and catching of JASON “BIG HAUS” FAUST and DANNY “SHOCK DOC G” GLASSMAN shellacked TEAM WAGNER, 17-5, in a game that wasn’t as close as the score indicated……hitting stars were……JOEL “LIL E” ELLISON with a grand slam in the opening frame and BRANDON “B LE B” LEBEAU with a grand salami of his own…….next up for TEAM GUTTMAN is the third of three games vs. TEAM ROTHSTEIN, winners of the previous two games…….
IN THE “GET WELL” DEPT…………
*MIKE GRAY was at the game cheering on his team after hurting his shoulder last week…….
*RON ROSE hurt himself behind the plate last night and had to leave the game…….
*JACK COHEN came up hurting, but stayed in the game………
IF I MISSED ANYONE, PLEASE LET ME KNOW………
NEXT WEEKS SEMI-FINALS PITS…….#4 SEED TEAM GREFER VS. # 8 SEED TEAM WEISBROT (THEY SPLIT DURING THE SEASON) ON FIELD # 1 AND #2 SEED TEAM GUTTMAN VS. #6 SEED TEAM ROTHSTEIN (TEAM ROTHSTEIN WON BOTH GAMES DURING THE SEASON) ON FIELD # 2……..JEFF “THE BLUE DEVIL” NASH must have something to say about this one, eh?
